Everything is better when Uncle Charlie comes to visit. They want more than the life they were born into. They are out of place and they need to escape. The point is that Charlie and Charlie are very similar. There are two detectives on the trail of a national killer, there are two suspects, there is a couple playing cards on the train, there are two Charlies, two kids in the family that are not Charlie, two parents, twice where Charlie Newton gets delayed by a copy, on and on. What I mean specifically is how many things in the film happen in twos. As I think more about this film after seeing it for the third or fourth time, I think what stands out to me is how Hitchcock is so intentional with the symmetry in Shadow Of a Doubt.Īnd, along with that, how important subconsciously establishing symmetry is to the payoff at the end.
